What do you do when your life explodes? A show that'll slap, tickle, shock and bend you over with laughter. 1/3 play, 1/3 standup, 1/3 rave.
Kate Dehnert's life recently blew up.
We're talking: relationship; career; income; opportunities; visa; losing almost all of her possessions; what country she lived in; she almost died; and for some incredibly annoying reason she now has a way-too-overactive gag reflex. Like, she could stand in front of you and if you told her to vomit, she could. What the hell?
And all of this only happened because the grey areas were so strong they may as well have been technicolour.
A brave, honest and vital exploration of an explosion and reconstruction of self.

Spoons see Damian Callinan return to the character narrative genre that has seen him receive nominations for Most Outstanding Show at MICF. Recently widowed, Stan Coates (84), is being nudged towards a move into a senior living facility, but he’s not having it. Sharp as a tack, but prone to falls brought on by orthostatic hypotension, he’s taken to wearing roller derby gear to obviate the dangers at home.
When his offspring trick him into an aged home visit, he plays along, but when the manager tell him he can’t bring his wife’s souvenir teaspoon collection, all bets are off. When his grandson, a student film maker, starts sharing his hilarious and heart wrenching riffs on the spoons, the clips go viral, and Stan becomes an unlikely poster boy for elder’s rights.

This hour blends razor-sharp comedy with heartfelt storytelling about race, queerness and kinship and the beauty of these identities while acknowledging and challenging the perceptions of these communities held by the wider population.
